Overview
Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed male cancer in many countries. The cancer starts growing in the prostate, a gland in the male reproductive system. It is caused when the cells in the prostate multiply and grow out of control forming a mass or tumor. As it is quite a variable disease, some tumors remain small and grow so slowly that they cause no problems for the rest of a man’s life while others are aggressive enough to grow quickly and become life-threatening.
The records show that the incidence of prostate cancer has been increasing in Ethiopia in the recent years. Partly this is due to the increasing use of the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test that results in detection of more cases and partly due to the fact that now men live longer. Most prostate cancer is common in those over 60 years. One new case occurs every 2.1 minutes and a man dies from prostate cancer every 18.6 minutes.

Options for prostate cancer treatment and surgery in India
- High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) makes use of high frequency energy to heat and destroy the cancer cells in the prostate gland. It is an outpatient procedure done under local or general anesthesia. As this is a non surgical procedure hence there is no incisions or blood loss and the recovery is quick.
- Radical Prostatectomy surgery is most common approach for treating the prostate cancer when it hasn’t spread outside the gland i.e. localized.
- Hormone therapy slows the growth of cancer cells but doesn’t kill the cancer cells. Hence it fights the cancerous cells by preventing the cancer from spreading in the body.
- Radiation therapy kills the cancer cells and prevents them from growing. Generally, it is used to treat the early stage prostate cancer or relieve the symptoms such as bone pain.
- Actually chemotherapy includes the different doses of drugs such as injections, pills or IV solutions that are administered into the patient to kill the cancer cells and prevent further relapse.
- Cryotherapy kills the cancer cells by freezing them. It is not a commonly used treatment but generally given to treat early stage prostate cancer in case it relapses after undertaking other cancer treatment.
Success rate in India
The success rate in India is quite higher. 99% of men with the most common types of prostate cancer will survive over five years after diagnosis. Over 90% of men with prostate cancer is localized to the prostate or just nearby.
